Acciaroli
Fishermen's boats, fishermen whose faces look weathered by the elements at sea, a friendly, but at times an unfriendly sea, a sea that is as blue as some eyes, green eyes, or old eyes, like Santiago's eyes. In the eyes of Acciaroli fishermen it is not difficult to see the pride and courage and the strength of Hemingway's hero, as he describes him in his novel 'The Old Man and the Sea' . In fact, many people claim that the famous writer was inspired by the fishermen of this place to create his character. What is for sure is that he must have been fascinated by the sublime beauty of this place, by the sea and by the people here: as we know, a writer draws inspiration from his own experiences.
Like the nearby village of Pioppi, Acciaroli has received awards like the 5 Vele (or 5 Sails), awarded by Legambiente (the Environment Authority), and Bandiera blue ( Blue Flag), a European aknowledgment, on account of its clear waters and the efficient tourist facilities.
Besides the little port, Acciaroli features the Annunziata (Annunciation) Church, that dates back to the XII century; however, it may looks more recent because of successive restoration works. It is worth seeing the porcelain composition on the gable picturing Our Lady of the Annunciation on the main entrance door, and the bell tower on the entrance gate , which along with the Norman tower make up Acciaroli's iconic skyline.
The Norman tower is a square defensive tower dating back to the XII century. It has been restored many times over the centuries; a special restoration took place in 1537, when the Spaniards made a strong defensive point on the coast.. It was at that time that the other tower called La Torre del Caleo was built just outside the village on the way to Pioppi. These were watch towers meant to spot the dangers coming from the sea; the messages passed from one tower to the next and reached also the villages inland. It is a real pleasure to travel along the coast among military fortifications, splendid bays, enchanting beaches that are never too crowded even in summer, or to go snorkeling or diving to admire the sea bottom world or also hike through the Mediterranean bush fragrant plants.
Acciaroli, a small welcoming and characteristic seaside village, is a place where you can still tase the ancient flavoursand where you can buy fish that was swimming just minutes before.
Acciaroli belongs to the municipality of Pollica.
