The long sand beach is the main feature of the landscape and it is near the mouth of the Alento river and the little port. Further north there is a pebbly beach and up on the hill one can see the Saracen watch Tower.
Among the things to visit we suggest the Chapel of St. Matthew the apostle and evangelist; this chapel stands on the place where a Church existed already in the IV century, that contained the body of St. Matthew until the year 954. The apostle died there in a shipwreck while sailing to Ostia. The monastery of St. Matthew Aad Duo Flumina' was first built around this little Church in the X century and later a group of houses called Casalicium were built. However, over the years the monks and the inhabitants moved up the nearby hill near the existing Carmelite convent of the Annunciation, because of the unhealthy air and the pirate raids on the coast. This was the origin of Casalicchio, (today's Casal Velino) that still keeps today the original layout of the little borough made of aristocratic mansions and narrow alleys and its wash-places with the springs, used in the past.
The olive oil produced in the area is highly prized.
Among the districts of Casal Velino, we must mention Acquavella that owes its name to the many springs supplying water to the Velia aqueduct. This village has also been left unchanged. At the Saint Michael the Archangel Church (X-XI centuries) there is a statue of the Virgin Mary, that is taken in a procession every five years on July 2, in remembrance of her miraculous perspiration.
