Padula
Padula is a small town in Vallo di Diano. It is located on a hill that is 699 metres above sea level and is above all famous for its Carthusian Monastery that is the biggest Monastery in the South of Italy. A short distance south of this little town, there is an area called Civita, where finds have been unearthed proving that the place has been inhabited since the XII century B.C. The development of present day Padula datesback to the IX-X centuries, when the Saracen raids vanished and people could safely live on the lower hill to be nearer the links with the consular road.. During the Longobard rule St. Michael worship became widespread; in fact in the hgher part of the town there is a Church dedicated to St. Michael. Near Padula, there is a popular holiday area (especially in the summer) called Mandranello. At about 4 km away from the centre there is a very green wooded area with pine trees and beech trees that make it a very attractive area.
Obviously, the greatest attraction in Padula is its Carthusin Monastery of St. Lawrence. This monastery was founded in 1306 and expands all around cloisters and common areas next to the Church. Visiting St. Lawrence's Church is a must, and it is interesting to visit the prior's flat, the library and the big Cloister. The Monastery expands over an area of 15.000 square metres, which makes it one of the largest monastic structures in Europe.
