Paestum

Paestum is one of the most important archaeological areas and a favourite destination for those who love sun and sea, thanks to the very long beach hidden by an endless pinewood.

The so called Temple of Neptune or Poseidon dates back to the mid-V century B.C. It was dedicated to Hera Argiva, the fertility goddess and is a splendid example of Doric architecture. The 36 fluted columns of the portico, with an entasis half way up, support nearly whole capitals. The well preserved triangular frontons on the short sides of the temple are also noteworthy.

The temple of Ceres in Paestum was probably dedicated to Athena , as the most recent archaeological finds lead us to believe.. This building was completed at the end of the VI century B.C. The 34 Doric columns of the portico, the entablature lintel and parts of the frontons remain of the original building. The temple of Hera, also known as Basilica, dates back to the mid-VI century B.C. The roof and the frontons have vanished, but the colonnade is still intact; it consists of 50 heavily tapered columns in the upper part.

The so called temple of Neptune is the largest and the best preserved of all the temples in Paestum, that was founded by Greek colonists in the VII century B.C. For a long time this temple was thought to be dedicated to Neptune= Poseidon in Greek, the city being called Poseidonia, but it is almost certain that it was dedicated to Hera. It is one of the best specimens of the Doric architecture in the West because of its impressive structure and the harmony of the whole.
