Pioppi
Pioppi is a seaside resort with a lovely beach in a small bay sheltered by the hills; it is only 7 km away from Acciaroli, 4 km from Casal Velino, 6 km from Velia and 37 km from Agropoli. It is a typical Cilento village and a very popular place for the sun and sea lovers. On account of his crystal clear waters and clean beaches, this village has received the Blue Flag and the 5 Sails award, by the Environment Authority.
Like nearby Acciaroli, Pioppi, also enjoys equal natural attractions, as well as a watch Tower. The church of Saint Mary of Pioppi is worth a visit; it is mentioned in documents dating back to 994, whereas the Vinciprova Castle was likely built in 600 by the Ripoli family from Pollica. After it was given by the Vinciprova family to the Town Hall, the building houses the Live Sea Museum consisting of 8 tanks containing the species of fish living in Local Cilento waters. Among these the strangest and the one visitors like most is the Tactile tank, where fish and molluscs can be touched. This is also the place where the Mediterrean Diet festival takes place. This world famous diet was created just here in Pioppi, where Ancel Keys, the American physiologist observed the eating habits of the local people and described the advantages of healthy eating to improve the quality of life and life expectancy.
A short detour inland leads us to Pollica, the municipality to which Pioppi belongs. Pollica stands at 370 metres above sea level and enjoys a wonderful view of the coast. Its Greek name means 'many houses'; it was founded by refugees from Velia in the 8th century and later was in the hands of the Benedictine monks from the Cava Abbey until 1410. The interesting places to see are the Capano Castle with its 1290 powerful medieval tower and the 1611 Franciscan Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Many festivals and evening events make the summer stays lively and interesting in this area.
