Sapri
Sapri stands in the middle of the Gulf of Policastro, that borders on three regions; Campania, Basilicata and Calabria and is surrounded by two National parks (Cilento-Vallo di Diano and Pollino). Sapri is also one of the most popular and best known holiday places in Cilento and in the whole of Campania. For years now Sapri has been proud to show the Blue Flag because of its clean water and beaches.
Carlo Pisacane, landed here with 300 patriots in 1857, Trying to arouse the poor peasants against the oppressive ruling Bourbons. With a few mates he took a scheduled steamer, landed on the island of Ponza, set free over 300 prisoners and they all landed in Sapri on the southern coast of Campania, but he failed to start a rebellion because the local peasants did not trust the liberators. So he was easily defeated by the regular troops. Pisacane, being wounded, committed suicide not to fall in the hands of the enemy. This unlucky historic event of our Risorgimento is remembered by the monument to Carlo Pisacane in the Town Hall Gardens and by the light house bearing his name.
