Velia
The city of Velia, also called Elea, was founded by the Phoceans in 540 B.C. The people living here lived mainly on fishing and sea trade. In Elea there was a School of Philosophy made famous by the philosopher Parmenides.
The archaeological excavations in Velia were started in 1927 by Amedeo Maiuri, and remains of an ancient Greek and Roman district were found with an ellenistic temple, along with ruins of II century A.D. Roman Baths, a shrine dedicated to Poseidon Asphaleios and the agorà.
